“𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 “
Nine years ago I heard these words come from my boss’s mouth. Joe was sitting with our HR liaison on the 9th floor of a 15 story building where I had worked for the past 13 years. I greeted both by name as I waked in and sat down across from them.
Immediately, Joe buried his face in a sheet of paper and began to read. I had been leading a very profitable committee and I thought we were discussing our newest initiative. Instead, he droned out a very brief, prepared statement. I didn’t quite understand what was going on, but I soon figured it out.
Joe, never lifting his head, read on until finally he finished with the following words: “Your job position has been eliminated,” Joe’s voice cracked.
That was quick
The whole monologue was only a few sentences and it took less than 30 seconds to read. But I was still a bit confused. My job position…
Joe finally looked up with sadness in his eyes. Empathy washed over me as I realized how difficult this must be for him. Instinctively, I began to comfort him and saying, “Joe, it’s ok…”
Johnny immediately broke in, shooting out his hand to cover mine saying, “Tony, is not about Joe right now. It’s about you,”
I laughed so suddenly that I snorted. But no one else laughed. I knew it wasn’t a joke but the whole thing was comical. I thought I was in a movie. It was just too cliche. “It’s not about Joe right now, it’s about you.”
“What? Hilarious,” I thought. Then I looked at Johnny and said, “Ok, Johnny, whaddya got for me?”
I knew I had to be serious, but I kept smiling. They must have thought I was crazy. I only half heard the cushy separation plan because I kept thinking of what I could do with my life now that I was free.
And that’s how my journey started. I was so excited. This was the push I needed to get free and do what I didn’t have the courage to do: Quit my job and blaze my own path. Personal training was my side hustle for years, but I had no intention of making it a primary focus of my life. It was just the happy little thing I did. Quite simply, it was a joyful hobby.
But, then things got REALLY interesting…
