In our society we are often tempted with ever increasing portions from restaurants, high calorie, low nutrition fast food and an over abundance of sweet treats. Believe it or not, these are not the reasons most of us gain weight. And it’s the first dieting no-no whenit comes to weight loss.

  1. 1. You’re Under Eating: Go ahead and clean your glasses and rub your eyes. It’s not over eating… it’s actually UNDER EATING! I’ll say it again. Most of us are stuck and having trouble losing weight because we are under eating!

“But, Tony, how can this be,” you ask in disbelief, “I eat ALOT and I’m never hungry. I feel full all the time.” Ok, I get it and you’re absolutely correct. Well, partially. Here’s why:

Our bodies are first and foremost survival mechanisms. Our bodies are designed to survive at all costs. There are many processes that make this happen from regulating our breathing, being alert and ready for flight or fight and yes, even slowing our metabolisms down if our calorie intake isn’t high enough.

We all have a magic number of calories that we need to eat in order to survive. This number is important for respiration, locomotion (movement) and cell regeneration and function, just to name a few. If we’re eating less than this number, then our bodies actually slow our metabolisms to match the number of calories we take in. In other words, our bodies adapt and burn less calories in order to survive.

For those of you that want to figure out what that magic number is for you, then you can watch the video here.

And with that, we move on to the second mistake people make when trying to lose weight.

2. You’re Over-Exercising: I know, there’s plenty of people who aren’t exercising at all, but many of us that are working like crazy to lose weight we are actually exercising too much. “Calories In in vs Calories Out,” we think. the numbers say it takes 3,500 calories to burn a pound of fat and that’s very true. However, we’re not meant to burn that all in one day! Just stop and think about it. If our bodies need time to recover from intense workouts and we’re working out intensely 5, 6, 7 days per week, then we’re not giving our bodies time to recover. The key word is intensely. If you’re doing light exercise everyday, then you most likely won’t experience over-training.

Remember Mistake #1 where most of us are under eating? Well, add that to this scenario and you’ve got a recipe for disaster because your muscles not only don’t have time to recover, but they aren’t getting the nourishment they require to recover. The result? You’ll have a tough time sleeping, persistent muscle soreness, susceptibility to illness and that spare tire around the midsection that never goes away!

now we move on to Mistake #3…

3. Not Getting Enough Sleep: We learned before that lack of sleep can cause weight gain. There are lots of reasons why including decreased insulin response, increased cortisol levels, and poor decision making. Researchers found that when dieters cut back on sleep over a 14-day period, the amount of weight they lost from fat dropped by 55%, even though their calories stayed equal. … So it’s not so much that if you sleep, you’ll lose weight, but that too little sleep hampers your metabolism and contributes to weight gain.” WebMD Jul 30, 2016
