Turning 40…

Most of my adult life I have been physically active. My first Gym membership was to Bally’s when I was 18. I have always been blessed with good genes and have never been overweight, even when I was Prego I didn’t gain an obscene amount of weight as I’ve heard a lot of women do.With all that said, I still never felt confident to wear sleeveless shirts b/c I was always consumed by a vision of “perfect arms” with muscle and definition but nothing too crazy. I’m not trying to be Ms. Olympia here… Even though the 80’s were over run by the crop shirt, I never wore them, not because I was super modest (nothing wrong with that) but b/c I never felt that my waist was thin enough, my stomach flat enough. My dad not being cool with THAT much skin showing might have also served as a deterrent. I was in short obsessed with my weight, the image of the person I wanted to be was in my head and I didn’t know quite how to bring her out and I definitely didn’t know that I had it in me.It wasn’t til over a year ago that I discovered a passion for weights. It’s like the variation of the song, “It’s all about the Bass”. Finally for me, it became more about the weights, bout the weights NOT JUST the treadmill. In my fitness backpack I had the treadmill card. When in doubt, feeling fat, need to lose 5 lbs.? Jump on that treadmill! I was 5’ 2.25” (yes the quarter of an inch DOES matter), all you petite women out there know what I’m talking about) and weighed 104 lbs. soaking wet. Looking back I definitely had body image issues (some might say I still do).Through exposure to the Les Mills Bodypump class I learned the fine art of lifting with good technique and form. I learned that the Max Rep Effect is not just a magical saying but it works. I’ve learned that I can get a massive sweat by lifting a decent amount of weights incorporating lots of reps. It gets the heart pump, the sweat dripping and then it’s all SMILES from there on. I soon dragged by BF into the class with me. He was hooked! We soon decided (his idea) that we should get certified in BP to teach it! I initially thought he was crazy (truth be told) and frankly I didn’t believe that I could do it, much less be good at it. You see my BF has the infectious energy at times and he can get you pumped (about whatever he’s pumped about at the time) and I’m so thankful he did. We went to our Les Mills training and were fortunate enough to meet not only an amazing Les Mills Master Instructor, (Aaron Ellis) but also a bunch of great people that we both still remain in contact with via FB. (Jessica, Chelsea, Wayne & Lees).
